Through the Breach – Choose Your Allegiance – Gremlins
Currently Gremlins are part of the Outcast faction but one of the changes with the version M2E rule-set is a move to a faction of their own. This doesn’t make a great difference really as in most games Gremlin players are limited to hiring Gremlins, Pigs and (on occasion) Vermin so they have to all intents and purposes been a faction of their own anyway. They’ll be joined by the Neverborn, Zoraida who is becoming dual faction (Neverborn/Gremlin) which should make for some interesting combinations…..
Som’er Teeth Jones.
Easily identified due to the ‘acquired’ top hat decorated heavily with stolen medals, buttons and other Miscellaneous bits and pieces, Som’er Teeth Jones leads his Gremlin kin from a position he perceives to give him the most honourable place in the ranks, namely the rear. Obviously a Gremlin with a hat as large as the one he himself possesses is far too valuable to risk his own self liberating the Bayou from the Earthside settlers encroaching on it’s borders. To Som’er the Bayou is Gremlin territory (which by default means HIS territory) and is therefore not to be freely given to any random human who feels like building a home on it. His actions have forced the Guild into a militant response which in turn justifies his opinion that they (the humans) are dangerous and need to be removed which then invites yet more actions by the Guild and so on. Despite the Guild’s belief Gremlins are little more than vermin to be exterminated, Som’er’s keen intellect (well…relatively keen…you know…compared to the average Gremlin) has managed to combine the various kins into a semblance of an organized front. In spite of his need to remove the humans themselves from his turf, Som’er is quite willing to ‘liberate’ some of the humans’ inventions for his own purposes. With their innate talent for mimicry, the Gremlins have begun churning out inferior copies of Earthside devices, especially their guns (or boomsticks as the Gremlins like to call them). Fortunately the average Gremlin gun is as likely to explode in the owners hands as it is to actually fire a projectile of some kind.
Som’er is better in the supporting role than fighting from the front. Som’er’s Totems provide him with an ability to attack at long range (he can currently take up to four Giant Mosquitoes as Totems), and the swarms of Gremlins a player can hire into a Crew will often overwhelm an opposing Crew by sheer numbers (well that’s the plan at least). Som’er and the Gremlins in general can also be a bit unreliable in the current edition so a somewhat random element is something you’ll need to enjoy if your using this Crew.
Note – The Mosquito above doesn’t come in the starter box but I’ve shown him here as you’ll most likely need to get one anyway as they compliment Som’er very nicely 😉
In the Beta rules released so far Som’er Teeth (and the Gremlins in general) have lost much of their random elements though he does still have abilities that can enhance Gremlins (and Pigs) close to him which still puts him in the category of a ‘support’ Master. Statwise he’s almost identical with only a slight reduction in charge range but he now has a slightly higher Wound (Wd) total. Currently (and I have no reason to think this will change) he can only take two Giant Mosquito’s so if I was you I wouldn’t rush out and buy four of them…like I did, lol. For those players who miss ‘Pull My Finger’…you know who you are…it can be bought as an upgrade, as can ‘Git Yer Bro!’ which allows you to summon additional Bayou Gremlins albeit at a small Wound cost to the summoner and the summoned.

Obsessively curious about the humans methods for waging war, The Gremlin clan leader Ophelia LaCroix has turned what was becoming a losing battle against their inroads into the Gremlins territory within the Bayou into at least a stalemate and possibly even a regaining of the initiative. The LaCroix Kin (As the Gremlin clans are referred to) had been the strongest of all the Gremlin Kins (In their opinion at least) and had been aggressively preparing to take on all those Kins led by Som’er Teeth Jones and to subsequently gain control of the Bayou Gremlins in their entirety…Unfortunately for them it was at this point that the Ortegas started hunting the Bayou for their kind and the usual Gremlin tactics (well what passes for tactics amongst the Kin) failed to repel the humans. Ophelia’s curious nature guided her to observe the tactics of these Ortegas (and especially their charismatic leader, Perdita) and she subsequently became convinced that emulating their actions would give her the edge she needed in the upcoming war for control of the Bayou. Since this moment of inspiration she and the closest of her kin have learned quite a bit and now mimic the fighting styles, methods and even the fashions of the Ortega clan. Unfortunately a copy is often imperfect and the Gremlins limited understanding of the things that they are copying may have limited their effectiveness. Even with this new-found knowledge the LaCroix have been unable to push the interlopers from the Bayou but they are now losing with a significantly reduced frequency. Perhaps these few victories will give the ambitious Ophelia the loyalty of Gremlin-kind that she previously was seeking.
Ophelia and the other LaCroix Gremlins mirror the abilities of an equivalent member of the Ortega clan. Ophelia is an excellent shot with her pistol, and with her current selection of Spells can increase her weapons damage or accuracy depending on the situation. She also has abilities which augment Gremlins including ‘Dumb and Lucky’, ‘Like Herding Squirrels’ and the ‘Oooo! A Girl!’ Action which allows her to move other Gremlins toward her and additionally the ‘Aim High, Boys’ Ability allows a Gremlin player to shoot into melee without fear of hitting their own crew members.
Well she gets to keep ‘Ooo, A Girl!’ which works identically to before but she loses the other support abilities. Her upgrades consist of a number of one shot guns with a variety of uses and she comes with a (1) Action that allows her to gain these upgrades during an encounter. From a stats point of view she has gained three extra Wounds and a couple of additional points of Willpower but has lost some charge range. However many models have had their Charge ranges altered due to the fact that a Charge Action though still costing two Action Points now gives you two attacks…

…and then there were three….
The Beta rules for M2E contain stat cards for a new Gremlin Master called the ‘Brewmaster’ but unfortunately we’re yet to see any artwork or hear any background material on him or his crew. We have an Enforcer called a ‘Whisky Golem’, his Totem is apparently called ‘Apprentice Wesley’ and his Minions are amusingly called ‘Moon Shinobi’ which judging from their cards appear to be experts in some kind of drunken style of Gremlin Kung-Fu. As soon as we get any further information on these guys I’ll be sure to let you all know.
Pictures of the majority of the models currently available to Gremlins can be found here.
Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.
