Through the Breach – Choose Your allegiance – Outcasts (Part 1)

As I covered the Gremlins in their own article there are only four Outcast Masters left to look at namely Hamelin the Plagued, Leveticus, The Viktorias and Von Schill.

The Outcast faction generally consists of those Masters that don’t fit neatly into another Faction’s archetype. Hamelin the Plagued is the host of a god (The ‘Tyrants’ are effectively the gods of Malifaux and even the Neverborn fear them). Leveticus is a Resurrectionist of sorts though is equally at home creating Steampunk constructs or combinations of both. Both the Viktorias and Von Schill are to all intents and purposes mercenaries and so are happy to work for almost anyone…anyone who can pay them that is…

Firstly, lets look at the Viks and Von* Schill

*No relation to our own Von…as far as I know, that is…

The Viktorias.

Background.
Wielding the legendary Lost Nihonto of Masamune, the twin Viktorias offer their mercenary services to the highest bidders in Malifaux. This pair of “sisters” are masters of both sword and pistol, and are more than willing to demonstrate this expertise in any area of Malifaux should you have the financial resources to hire them. The pair fight as one on the battlefield with each sister seemingly appearing from nowhere to aid the other giving the impression that they are anywhere and everywhere simultaneously, possessing a near supernatural awareness of one another’s thoughts and intentions during a battle. One Viktoria is a deadly opponent, however if your fighting one sister then your fighting both…though ‘sisters’ isn’t entirely accurate…

A rare few know that the Viktorias are not actually sisters at all in any real manner. Instead, one of the pair is one of the rumoured Neverborn creatures called Doppelgänger’s…

Its ability to mimic Viktoria and her skills was at first unsettling to the original Earthside version especially as it’s initial purpose was to seize the magical Masumune blade from her for the Neverborns own purposes. However as time passed, the ‘twins’ came to form a strange link with one another, and the Doppelgänger’s knowledge of the City of Malifaux and the hidden secrets it contains are invaluable in their particular line of work.

1.5
The Viktorias obviously work best when used in tandem, maximizing the effects of their Abilities and Actions that affect both models. Their ability to summon the ‘other’ Viktoria to them increases their threat range considerably. The ability to sacrifice a ‘Ronin’…

…in order to resurrect a deceased Viktoria increases the Master’s survivability considerably, though their lack of a starting Soulstone Cache means their player must be careful to ensure that the appropriate resources exist to make this available as an option during the game. The Viktorias excel in melee and therefore coming within the reach of their swords more often than not means your dead… The Viktorias are capable of unleashing a torrent of melee attacks and damage on the enemy that between them is highly unlikely to be possible to withstand, though they still need support as throwing both your Masters into the middle of an opposing crew alone and unsupported is rarely a good idea.

A brief note on Ronin.
Ronin are annoyingly cheap mercenaries for hire and are pretty much obligatory in a Viktorias crew. They are fairly hard to get rid off and can do some serious damage with their swords if they get close and their pistols at range. Another useful ability is that as mentioned above if you lose one of the Viktorias they might not be dead, they might just be disguised as one of the Ronin 😉

M2E

The Viktorias have had a bit of a make-over for M2E

As is to be expected they are still formidable Melee experts and have abilities that enhance one another. Their movement tricks still exist though they are somewhat changed in form and limited in range and though the old ‘sisters in spirit’ ability can be bought as an upgrade it is now limited in range to 6″. Most of the other upgrades are enhancements to their melee abilities such as increasing damage, adding positives to flips, etc. Ronin…

The Ronin have apparently gone for a change of look as well…wait…one of those pictures doesn’t look quite right…

…are still extremely useful and good value but can no longer be used to resurrect Viktorias…sorry*

*I’m not actually sorry…it will be nice to only have to kill them once each for a change…

Von Schill.

Karl Von Schill is a highly formidable and dangerous individual. After a successful military career Earthside Von Schill journeyed to Malifaux to offer his services to the Guild as a mercenary. After a less than agreeable meeting with the Governor General Von Schill resigned his contract with the Guild and became ‘freelance’. He decided to remain in Malifaux as he had realised that this new world had a great may opportunities to offer a man with his particular talents and he began to offer the services of him and his Freikorps to the highest bidder Even the Guild still use him though it is rumoured that he charges the Guild more than other employers for exactly the same services as penalty for their earlier attitude.

Under his leadership, Von Schill’s men located and procured a trove of ancient artefacts deep within the Quarantine Zone. He wanted a headquarters for his Freikorps that was as far from the Guild’s prying eyes as possible and he also realised that his men needed to be equipped with formidable arcane resources for them to be considered a competitive force in the City. The headquarters, which his men have nicknamed “The Hole”, allows Von Schill to engage in his own exploration and salvage of the ruined City and given the inherent dangers of the Quarantine zone he has little competition there outside of the Resurrectionists that also have their bases there. Whether working as a mercenary or conducting his own operations Von Schill is amassing a great wealth of Scrip and arcane resources and will stop at nothing in order to ensure that this continues for as long as he lives…
1.5
Von Schill and his Freikorps are an effective and well balanced Crew. Their Freikorps Armor negates damage from a number of effects, and their weaponry is state of the art in comparison to the standard weapons other Crews will bring to a fight. Von Schill is as formidable in game as his background would suggest and is easily able to stand toe-to-toe with apparently stronger opponents, inflicting high levels of damage with both his ‘Clockwork Seeker’, ‘Hunting Knife’ and their appropriate Triggers. His military background is represented by such abilities as ‘Hard-Ass’ and ‘Leader’. He is also amusingly able to fly over the fight and reach targets protected by intervening models using his armour’s ‘Augmented Jump’. If you want a Master and crew that give you a fighting chance in any situation then these are the guys (and gal) for you. He is also one of the few ‘Henchmen’ level characters that is easily as good as many of the Masters with his available model types being more than adequate for any task you may need them for.
M2E.
As I don’t yet have a picture of M2E Von Schill…here’s Hannah, the Librarian instead 😉
All I can say is that some-one in Wyrd’s rule writing team really likes Von Schill…
Both his ranged and close-combat attacks do very good damage and he comes equipped with armour that ignores both pulse and blast effects (as do all Freikorps models) and the standard armour that reduces damage by 1. He has a zero (0) action that increases the Willpower of all friendly nearby Freikorps models as well as effectively giving them the ‘Hard to Kill’ ability which is a nice bonus. Amongst his upgrade options are a healing ability that also makes him terrifying for a turn, one that makes him immune to ‘Horror’ duels and passes that ability onto friendly models for a turn should he kill something and another that allows friendly models within 8″ to take two zero (0) actions rather than one and being that his ‘Steam Trunk’ Totem has several useful Actions of this type that can be used by friendly models this is an extremely useful support ability…especially as one of those allows a healing Flip (it also requires the player to discard a Control card so it has it’s limits).
Though I joke about his effectiveness there are still many Masters that will hand his ass to him should they manage to engage him on their own terms so he’s not unbalanced, just fairly forgiving.
Hamelin the Plagued and Leveticus will be covered next week before we move on to everyone’s new favourite…the Ten Thunders…
