Time, Motivation and Real Life Getting in the Way…

I’m somewhat possessive over the little spare time I get…

Like most adults I have a large number of things I have to do. Amongst these many essentials are going to work (I work mainly night shifts so this adds the additional wrinkle of being asleep while most people are awake and awake while all useful services are unavailable), Sleep (which due to my odd shift pattern could happen at almost any time including mid conversation on more than one occasion), Eating (Not human flesh or the blood of the innocent…despite what SinSynn keeps telling everyone…well…not all the time anyway) and the normal demands on the time of a person with a family who exists in the real world…

…the upshot of which is that I have to prioritise what I spend my hobby time on if I want to get anything done at all…..Of course this is often easier said than done…

My two favourite game systems at the moment are Wyrd Games Malifaux for which I buy pretty much everything they release and Prodos Games Warzone (Mutant Chronicles Warzone Resurrection technically but that’s a lot to type out every-time I mention it…) for which I own everything currently available for the Dark Legion faction and one of every starter set currently released though Mantic Games Deadzone and Privateer Press’s Warmachine game probably tie for third at the moment. If this wasn’t enough I also have a tendency to get involved in other game systems as I’m tempted by Kickstarters or things I see other people playing that trigger the ‘that looks cool’ response and subsequently make my wallet quake in fear. I’m sure it goes without saying that the majority of these systems are sitting in my hobby room in varying states of completeness ranging from ‘still in box’ through to ‘when are you going to do that last layer of wash’ and everything in between…

To be fair the latter ‘that looks cool’ reason is why I own several crews from the Knight Models Batman Miniatures Game…but then Batman is always going to have a ‘cool’ factor…unless Ben Affleck manages to ruin that for everyone again after we were all just managing to get over the George Clooney version…though I think the criticism poor Gal Gadot is getting for ‘not looking exactly like the comic character in the ‘boob’ department is a tad unfair as lets be honest ‘films ignoring what comic characters actually look like’ is not exactly new….

For some strange reason I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt but not Ben Affleck…can’t think why though…

…but I digress..

I’m also somewhat handicapped with the psychological issue of liking assembling things but then being too lazy to paint them resulting in some slightly embarrassing issues such as the Space Marine ‘Rhino’ transport I bought a decade ago still not getting past the ‘undercoat’ stage and even worse money pits such as my Forge World Greater Brass Scorpion of Khorne that still sits patiently awaiting paint…

Dust is NOT Paint…

…and a Warhound Titan that’s still waiting for me to finish assembling it past the stage I left it at about three years ago…

I blame the low shelf myself…

…and the problem I have with never bothering to repair models that I break until I absolutely need them for a game or tournament and sometimes not even then…

These guys and gals just need a bit of care and attention…
These ones need a bit more help…gravity is a harsh mistress…

…and that’s before we even talk about projects that I abandoned for so long that they stopped supporting the game system in the meantime…

Still in ‘Space Dock’ or ‘Random Shelf’ as it’s more commonly known…

So judging from the piles of boxes, dusty painting trays and blog posts still awaiting the final parts for them that I see other people having I’m obviously not the only person who has these issues. I started a feature on my own blog called either the ‘crew a week project’ or the ‘crew a week challenge‘ depending on whether you look at the article titles or the search tag (I got confused at some point…I blame lack of sleep…or too much sleep…it was one or the other…) because I thought that if I made a rash statement like “I’ll get this done by Sunday” that a combination of peer pressure and fear of public humiliation might motivate me to get shit done. To be fair it worked for a while and I actually caught up on my Malifaux crews though I had to resurrect the feature when I somehow ended up twelve crews behind.

So that’s my shame now out there for you all to see..well apart from those pictures that are locked in the safe in the ‘special’ basement that only I’m allowed to look at. So how do you guys and gals stay motivated? Because if there’s a magic pill nobodies told me about it….
