What does our choice of army say about us?

Loquacious’s series of articles on starting in the hobby started to make me think about some of my own early choices about what army I used…

Some of my own choices may have had something to do with the time I started in the hobby. The current Chaos Space Marine Codex had just been released and that was what the Games Workshop stores were pushing. Obviously they were also pushing the newer kits that went along with it as well.

As time passed by I jumped from one Marine codex and back again with what was basically the same army. It just happened to be getting bigger and bigger….However in my head the army theme always stayed the same. Marines who did whatever they damn well pleased 😉

I have since then done Daemon, Tyranid and even Infantry Guard armies but I always come back to those dirty renegade bastards…

So what factors make those choices for everybody else?

The Look.

I’m not a fan of Orks myself. I like my vehicles to look like they actually are capable of movement (yes I know a Rhino wouldn’t actually work…..Shut Up!) but I can understand how that overall ‘look’ could appeal to a certain mindset. Tau have that whole ‘Anime’ appearance about them, Imperial Guard have that ‘Real army’ vibe and Tyranids most likely resonate in the mind of anybody who enjoyed either of the first couple of ‘Aliens’ movies. Marines of all colours and varieties have a certain style about them which makes their ‘Super Soldier’ look have an instant appeal and so, on. I observed plenty of people who had no interest in the Xenos races at all rush out and spend a fortune on Dark Eldar as soon as they saw the models…

The Background ( Or ‘Fluff’ if You Prefer ).

As mentioned briefly above Space Marines have the ‘Hero’ archetype pretty sewn up. Their background is full of images of fighting against overwhelming odds and winning or conversely dying a heroes death (usually against those same overwhelming odds). They also cover pretty much all the hero types we like from Warrior Monks to Vikings and everything in between.
For those of us who always cheer for the villain in movies we have the ‘evil’ races like Chaos Marines, Dark Eldar, Necrons and I suppose Tyranids that each have their own unique reasons for wanting to turn the galaxy into their own vision of hell (for everyone else, obviously).
Of course for some of us it may just be the background of one individual character who appeals to us on some level, whether that be the charismatic leadership of Logan Grimnar or the perfect killing machine that is Lelith Hesperax…

Play Style.

The thought of drowning your opponent under a sea of bodies (whether they be Guardsmen, Orks or Termagants) might be what appeals to you, maybe it’s a wall of Vehicles (Imperial Guard, Razorback Spam), a lightning ‘alpha-strike’ (Dark Eldar, Blood Angels) or even an army of walking armour (Dreadnought Spam) somewhere amongst the Pile of 40K rulebooks there will be something for you. Each army has it’s own unique style and (well with some of them at least) multiple ways to transfer that style onto the table top.

The New Hotness…

This needs little explanation, it’s new, it’s shiny, it’s all you’ve heard about for the last three months and you bloody well want it. The fact that the Internet tells you you’ll never lose* a game while using it is just icing on the cake.

* Or never win a game depending on which websites and forums you frequent 😉

So onto the comment generating question of…..why did you choose your army?
