[Another Year of Frugal Gaming] Through The Dust And Gasoline

You know what?

It’s been a quiet couple of weeks. I’m dabbling in and out of Diablo III, still keeping up with the play-by-post roleplaying, and I finished up the Revenants for SAGA, but realistically, I’ve spent little and gamed less. Been working. Been house-hunting. Been saving. Been resting.

Sometimes, the way of the Frugal Gamer means conserving your energy, directing it to where it’s needed. Sometimes that means not gaming at all. Sometimes he who blogs not blogs not because he games not.

Funnily enough, this has given me time to think. (I’m scared too.) Specifically, about the word ‘frugal’. The trusty OED identifies the origin ‘frugalis’, from the Latin, derived from frux, meaning fruit, profit or utility, and defines the modern word thus:

  • Careful or sparing in the use of food, goods, etc.; economical.
  • Of things, especially food: Sparingly supplied or used; of small cost; opposed to luxurious.

I’m not a hundred per cent sure that’s actually what I’m doing here. Back in January I made myself accountable in terms of input and output, and that was the right thing to do, but is it frugal? I’m not sure. A lot of goods and money have changed hands, and there has not been a particularly sparing usage either. I made another commitment in January, to stop fussing so much and just do things if I felt like them, and a conflict of interests is beginning to make itself felt. No angst, merely a raised eyebrow: is this what I set out to do?

Anyway, if all this musing is tiresome, do yourself a favour and go NOW to see the new Mad Max thing. Go now. It’s chuffin’ brilliant. It is exactly what I have been talking about when I say “make things that are progressive by accident, as a side effect of just making better things.” It is brutal, it is gorgeously shot, it is fun, and… okay, look, the most reasonable review of it I’ve read so far is this one and take it from me, it works perfectly well if all you want out of it is deserts, petrol, murder, explosions and dusty people shooting the shit out of each other. You’ll get that. In spades.

That’s all for now. You’ll have to forgive me. I’ve a lot on my mind.
